Logan County
Pictorial History
- Beginning in 1819, Logan County’s story has been that of a grand human adventure on the limitless expanse of the tall-grass prairie.
- Three key phenomena have shaped the county’s economic, political, and social development: the cornfields, the railroad train, and the grain elevator. Living in the center of our “nation’s breadbasket,” residents contributed to American growth through the production of grain.
- The county was named by Abraham Lincoln in honor of Dr. John Logan, an Illinois House member and a personal friend of Lincoln’s.
- Each chapter chronicles the history of an individual city in Logan County. The focus is on the townspeople and their relationship to the larger community as they built churches, attended school, and formed governments.
